Why do 'ordinary' people go to fight Islamic State?

There's nothing ordinary about the men and women who go to fight Islamic State in Syria or Iraq. Why would there be? Why leave the stability and security of an 'ordinary' life in the UK, the USA or Australia, to take up arms in a bloody and brutal war?
